Overview
This presentation offers a historical context for the women and-youth-led protest movement which erupted after the death of Mahsa Jina Amini on September 16, 2022. The protests, which are widespread throughout Iran, and are now in their fifth month, and have been met with brutal force; more than 18,000 people have been arrested and more than 520 civilians have been killed. What is the significance of this movement for change in Iran and why does global solidarity matter?

Persis Karim is the Director and Neda Nobari Chair of the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies and teaches in the Department of Comparative & World Literature at San Francisco State University.
