Overview

Black and white photo of man looking through camera

Not only was the first photographic image created by a Frenchman (Niépce), and then improved upon by another (Daguerre), France has given us a host of remarkable photographers. We’ll talk about Nadar, the brilliant portraitist who did the first aerial photo, the first underground photo, and the first bit of photojournalism. (He may even have been a spy!). We’ll look at Brassaï, the émigré who came to be known as the eye of Paris, and also at the man who gave us the “decisive moment,” arguably the greatest photographer ever, Henri Cartier-Bresson.
