Why Do Museums Matter? How Can We Make them Better?

James G. Leventhal will explore the subject through the lens of his own experience exploring elements of his own career across multiple institutions.

Currently Deputy Director & Chief Development Officer at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), Leventhal is a museum leader who has been in the field as an arts professional for over 30 years with significant experience in all elements of high-impact museum work from education, marketing, collections digitization, and organizational development to fundraising.  

He has worked at the San Jose Museum of Art, The Exploratorium, The Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Judah L. Magnes Museum, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.   Before moving out West, James worked for eight years at The Metropolitan Museum, as well as the Phillips Collection and Baltimore Museum of Art.
