Interest Groups

Interest groups are an outgrowth of our members desire for advanced exploration, discussion and community. The first Wednesday of the month is an OLLI Brown Bag Lunch. All members are encouraged to participate and contribute as part of their lifelong learning experience. We welcome new groups, suggestions and ideas.

Groups meet at SF State's Downtown Campus at Market / Powell unless otherwise indicated.

SF State OLLI is proud that Sixty Plus, one of the longest standing Lifelong Learning communities (since 1975!), is part of our program! Activities include 21 meetings with lectures; and options to add organized tours, trips, luncheons, and more. Monthly newsletter via email and mail. The number of activities which this group organizes require a part-time paid coordinator. Their speakers are also paid. This is why it is a Premiere Membership of our program. Click here to add!

OLLI Hikers Group

Current Facilitator: Ana Linder
Members take turns coordinating hikes

Meeting Day/Time: Varies. Watch Events page

The hiking/walking group is a cooperative whereby we all pitch in and share responsibilities for leading walks/hikes in our beautiful Bay Area, and take our turn for the ongoing management tasks. We currently hold a walk a month. The walk/hike leader determines the route of the walk, what time it starts and ends, its pace, length and elevation change. It is the responsibility of the leader to familiarize her/himself with the trail, begin and end the walk on time, and make sure that there are sufficient restrooms. The team leader will send out a description of the walk/hike at least two weeks in advance. It is the responsibility of walkers to only sign up for walks/hikes that are appropriate for their level of physical fitness, and to make sure that they pack sufficient water, sunscreen and layers of clothing.

SF Adventures

There are many free and low cost events in our great City and this group shares cool activities (like visiting out of the way SF places, attending events) with OLLI participants to explore SF, get to know OLLI members and socialize.  Email if you are interested in being part of this new group.

Share A Book

Facilitator - Pat Keenan
Meeting Day/Time: 3rd Tues of the month, 11a.m.

Instead of a typical book club, participants discuss books they have read recently and share recommended reading.  Hear about a book that each group member is passionate about and discuss it’s genre, country of origin, author, etc. Meets monthly. For more info email or call (415) 817-4243.

Caring Community Study Group

Facilitator: Rufus Browning
Meeting Day/Time: 2nd Wednesday of the month from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

We meet because we as members of an aging community need support as we age. We have a mission statement and charter for a community of OLLI members who commit ourselves to help each other in order to avoid institutionalization and isolation and facilitate aging in place. We are a support group: we share information, concerns and resources, including our own issues and experiences with giving and needing help, and we help each other with difficult problems, choices and plans. We talk about issues that are not easy to discuss elsewhere. New members are welcome at any time. Email for more information.

World Affairs Discussion Group

Meeting Day/Time:  3rd Wednesday of the month, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The group discusses issues of world and/or national importance. Often one member gives a short report on a topic, and then the group discusses it. We invite OLLI members who like to read and keep up, listen and share ideas to join us.For more info email or call (415) 817-4243
