OLLI Hikers: A Walk on the West Side
Facilitated By: Linda Liebelt and Vivian Brown
Most people wouldn’t imagine Ocean Avenue to be a grand hiking route. In fact, it is still very much “a work in progress”. So let’s explore some of the sights and discover some nifty spots to dine, shop, or visit as we stroll along Ocean Avenue from City College to Stonestown. We’ll actually see highlights of 3 distinctive San Francisco neighborhoods: Ocean Avenue (the commercial district; Merced Heights; and the Ingleside (including the lovely Ingleside Terrace with its distinctive sundial on Entrada Court).
Time: Plan to be there @ 10 AM, but the hike will officially begin at 10:30 AM. We should be done by 12:30 or 1 pm, depending on how fast we walk and how many stops we make.
Meeting Place: the Cafeteria inside of Smith Hall, located off of Cloud Circle on the main campus of San Francisco City College, 50 Phelan Avenue. Smith Hall is located on the portion of Cloud Circle that is closer to Ocean Avenue. If you want coffee, tea, or snacks, plan to arrive by 10 AM, because the Cafeteria closes at 10:30 until lunchtime. There are vending machines in the building that sell water & candy.
Restrooms: available in the building where the Cafeteria is located. En route: Cloud Hall; inside the Whole Foods Market on Ocean Avenue. At end of the tour: inside Stonestown Shopping Mall
Parking: some parking available in the Reservoir Lot off of Phelan Avenue. Elsewhere, street parking @ the neighborhood is difficult and time-limited. We highly recommend taking MUNI or BART/MUNI. Uber and Lyft are other options.
Bus routes: K Ingleside stops at Ocean Ave x Lee Street, also at Ocean Ave just past Geneva (take pedestrian overpass to campus). From BART at Balboa Park station, take either the K Ingleside or the #29 (to Ocean Ave x Lee). #43 makes several stops in the vicinity: on Judson Avenue, Foerster St., & on Phelan Avenue, which is the stop that is closest to our meeting point.
Length of hike: “a touch over” 3 miles, mostly flat terrain, all paved streets. Long steep stairway off of Cloud Circle up to the Science Building (Cloud Hall) early in the hike. Otherwise, very minimal elevation gain. Good easy hike for anyone with mobility issues, although hiking poles are recommended for anyone who regularly uses them.
Lunch, water, & snacks: Available in Smith Hall Cafeteria, at Whole Foods, Ambrosia Bakery, Stonestown, & other locations along Ocean Avenue
Weather: we’ll pray for a sunny warm day, but this is usually a foggy part of the City. Dress in layers. RAIN CANCELS.
