OLLI Hikers - A Walk to Historic Mount Sutro
Come join your fellow OLLI hikers as we walk the cloud forest known as the Mt. Sutro Open Space Preserve. On our way we’ll travel through the beautiful Parnassus Heights and Cole Valley neighborhoods, with interesting brick-paved streets and a house with a quirky history as only San Francisco can produce. On Mt. Sutro, we’ll travel the historic trail up to the summit and Rotary Meadow, and see work done by the Sutro Stewards, a non-profit group working in partnership withthe UC San Francisco to improve this open space for conservation and recreational needs of the surrounding communities. Some of the trails up on the mountain are rocky and can make for uneven footing, so be sure to wear sturdy walking or hiking shoes and bring a walking stick if you use one. We suggest long sleeves and long pants due to the potential for poison oak. There are restrooms at the start of the walk inside Cole Hall and a restroom midway at the Aldea Community Center where we’ll stop for a short break. Bring water and a snack if you wish.
Please meet us (Linda Liebelt and Janis Gomes) at 10:30 am outside Cole Hall, at 513 Parnassus on the UCSF Campus. (It is the building with grayish pillars out front, which is actually a piece of artwork covered with tile pieces showing old and new yearbook photos!) Parking is very limited so we strongly recommend using public transportation. Several MUNI lines serve the area @ UCSF, including the #43, 6, 44, 37, 66, and the N Judah. To plan your trip via MUNI, consult MUNI’s online schedule for up-to-date schedules and travel times. If you plan to drive, your best parking option is Golden Gate Park, where you can park for 3 or 4 hours; also at Stow Lake & the parking area near the Conservatory of Flowers (off of Kennedy Drive) which has unlimited parking. There is also a short driveway between Kezar Drive & Lincoln Way that has just a few parking spaces (if you are lucky enough to grab one of them!).You can always park in the UCSF garage, but there is an hourly charge.
If you decide to park in Golden Gate Park, you can reach the meeting place (513 Parnassus) by walking up from the Park to the entrance to UCSF at the corner of Arguello & Irving Street. There are actually 2 entrances: one at the just-mentioned corner, and another well inside the parking garage down the street, at Irving Street & 2nd Avenue. The entrance closest to the corner @ Arguello is the easiest one to find. Go all the way inside the building, walking straight ahead to the back of the building where you will find a bank of elevators. Ride one of them to the top floor (“*1”) & when you exit, turn and walk outside, straight down the walkway to Parnassus. To your left is a stoplight and crosswalk – cross the street and turn right. Proceed a short distance to 513 Parnassus and meet us just inside the building.
Please Note: Participants should wear hiking boots and bring walking sticks or poles if they have them. Some sections of this hike are quite steep and on uneven ground.ai
